The Hardships of Raising Pigs
Our first set of pigs I wanted to make sure the kids understood, yes they are cute now but they are going in the freezer for meat. We had a long discussion about what kinds of meat we will be getting and so forth. But they still ended up with the names of Patty & Petunia. Our first few days we had them Patty died. It was a lack of vitamin K which they usually get when they are born. Apparently Patty eluded the farmer during... (posted by Cher 3 years 110 days ago.)

Save Until You Have a Surplus?
Just so you understand my way of thinking I have to take a step back to when I was still a child. I spent a lot of time at my grandmother's house as a child. She grew up during the depression and she saved everything and when I say everything, I am being literal. After supper if there were a spoonful of peas left, you saved it. I remember summers of having to eat mint jelly with my peanut butter sandwiches. No one liked... (posted by Cher 3 years 111 days ago.)

O’ Christmas Tree
Living in the country and on a farm sometimes money is tight and you have to really think about how you spend your money. Our tradition since we moved here six years ago is to search the woods for a Christmas tree. My husband dreads it so and complains about it because he grew up with the fake tree. I grew up with the fresh smell of pine and spruce in our house and only rich people could afford the fake trees anyways. Sure we had plenty... (posted by Cher 4 years 172 days ago.)

Do You Have Any Bacon?
Bacon People On our farm we raise our own meat, something that was important to us. We have raised pigs in the past, which would give us an abundance of bacon. We have ours sliced thick. It is a luxury after buying the thinly sliced stuff from the store. There is a menu board on the wall of my farm stand where items are listed with a price. If I am sold out of an item, it is labeled in bright red marker "sold out". It is very... (posted by Cher 4 years 195 days ago.)

The Great Pig Escape
Our farm is located in a small town (pop. 400) that essentially is a bedroom community. A bedroom community is best described as everyone works out of town. (This distinction will be important later in the story.) My adventures are many on the farm and usually not funny at the time of any episode. It was a cold cloudy wet November day. Just a miserable drizzle of weeping rain and I was cozy in the house with the woodstove. My day... (posted by Cher 4 years 237 days ago.)
